Crop to vertical

  1. Open the video in the GIF Maker, from your device or a link.
  2. Under Crop, press Crop and choose 9:16. A box appears on the preview, and the rest of the editor waits until you’re done.
  3. Drag the box over the part you want to keep. Use Crop size to zoom in, and the arrow keys to nudge it on a computer.
  4. Press Done to see the cropped result with your captions, or Cancel to go back to how it was. Change crop opens it again.
  5. Choose the section and format, then press Create.

Which shape?

  • 9:16: full-screen vertical, for stories and short-video feeds.
  • 4:5: tall but not full-screen; takes up more of a feed than a square.
  • 1:1: square; works almost everywhere.
  • 16:9: wide, for turning a vertical video landscape.

Shapes that match your video already aren’t shown.

Keep it sharp

Cropping a 9:16 slice out of a 16:9 video keeps only about a third of its width, so start from the best quality you can. Choose a larger Size: for linked videos, the editor then loads the best-quality version, which it notes beside the size. Zooming in with Crop size keeps even less of the picture, so use it sparingly.

Add the finishing touches

Vertical clips are made for phones, so captions help: add up to three in the same editor. The captions guide covers styles and timing.
