Make a boomerang

  1. Open your video in the GIF Maker.
  2. Pick a short moment with some motion, one to three seconds is usually plenty.
  3. Set Direction to Boomerang. The preview plays forwards, then backwards.
  4. Choose GIF or MP4, then press Create and download it.

Why boomerangs loop so well

A normal loop jumps from the last frame back to the first. A boomerang ends where it started, so it plays round and round with no visible cut. That’s why short boomerangs work so well as GIFs.

Reverse, speed and repeats

  • Reverse plays the moment backwards once per loop.
  • Speed slows the loop down or speeds it up. Slow motion suits boomerangs.
  • For MP4, Repeat in file plays the loop several times in one file, for apps that don’t loop videos by themselves. For GIF, Plays sets whether it loops forever, once or three times.

What about sound?

Sound only fits a video playing forwards at normal speed, so boomerangs and reversed loops are silent. The sound button under the preview switches off in reverse for the same reason.
